It is no surprise that our active members of UK Youth Parliament have been extremely busy over the Lockdown period to make your voices heard, in a number of ways. There has been a variety of campaigns which our members have been involved with, and here you will find an overview of some of their amazing work. We are looking forward to being back in college in September, so that the great work can continue and more of you will be able to get involved!

Youth Parliament Devon-Wide Campaign – Greener Devon (Joe Hartley)

The Devon-Wide campaign, named Greener Devon, is focusing on the issue of the climate and ecological crisis in the UK and Devon. In May, we created a competition for young people aged 0-18 to design a logo for our campaign or poster showing what a “greener Devon” would look like. We were incredibly astonished at how many entries we received (almost 200 by email). We will be releasing these entries within the next week so, if you have already heard of us and submitted an entry, watch out for that on Devon Youth Parliament’s Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook! (Click logo below to link to Facebook page.)

We are currently in the process of planning an exciting opportunity for schools to earn a “Devon Youth Parliament” certified award by achieving several goals to become greener and more eco-friendly. We are working closely with Devon Climate Emergency (click logo below for website), the Waste Education Team in Devon County Council and the Local Nature Partnership (click logo below for website), to ensure that our work all ties in with existing organisations.

Youth Parliament Exeter (Saffron Moon)

Exeter’s campaign focuses on Mental Health awareness. We think this is an extremely important issue, especially in Lockdown. We’ve set up an Instagram account (@exeterinsight) and we post daily with motivational and inspiring quotes, positive news from around the world and “insights” (interviews) into people’s experiences with Mental Health. We’ve had some good feedback, and it’s fun designing the graphics to go on the page.

What’s been going on in Youth Parliament? (Jake Gregory)

We have been very busy in Lockdown doing Youth Parliament work. We have started work on our national campaign, which is to do with the environment. We named our part of the campaign ‘Greener Devon’. To promote our campaign and get children involved we started a logo and poster competition and managed to get two people from Youth Parliament onto BBC Radio Devon to launch it! We received over 100 entries from children across Devon and after a painfully long time we got it down to one. Now it’s the task of next steps for our campaign.

Other than the national campaign we have been focusing on our separate local campaigns. The campaign which we are focusing on is ‘Youth Services’. We had a meeting with the CEO of VOYC who work with Youth Services (click logo below for website), to talk about what areas in Mid and East Devon need improving.
